Visa Secure EMV 3DS

Visa Secure is a global solution designed to make e-commerce transactions more secure by helping to
ensure the transaction is initiated by the rightful owner of the Visa account. Implementing Visa Secure
can improve profitability through increased sales and reduced operational costs.
The Three-Domain Secure (3-D Secure or 3DS) Protocol that Visa Secure is based on serves as the
mechanism for cardholder authentication at the time of an e-commerce purchase. For merchants and
issuers, Visa Secure provides an additional layer of security prior to authorization, and for cardholders,
it creates the trust they seek when shopping online.
This Guide describes the Merchant / Acquirer’s Visa Secure implementation requirements for EMV
3DS. EMV 3DS includes updates and enhancements to address the need for a more seamless online
payment experience for consumers, while accommodating new devices and ways to pay. EMV 3DS
enables expanded use of risk-based and other authentication methods to minimize friction during the
cardholder checkout experience and reduce cart abandonment by facilitating a greater exchange of
data between merchants and issuers.
Note: EMV 3DS does not currently support mail order/telephone order (MOTO) transactions.
